TANE Timeline

TANE was founded in 1942 by Sergio and Natalia Leites, who originally came from France. Art collectors, they came to Mexico after fleeing from Paris during World War II. They settled in Mexico City's Zona Rosa where they opened a leather products boutique, known as a tannerie ("tannery" in French), from which the name "TANE" comes.
After a period of time, they decided to give their business an unexpected twist; they began to work with local goldsmiths in order to create details for their bags and accessories, thus beginning their relationship with the country's silver.

It was in 1953 when TANE moved to the street of Amberes in the Colonia Juarez, and began focusing on jewelry design, particularly inspired by pre-Columbian art pieces.
The house thus began what would eventually be an astounding legacy in jewelry, focusing on silverwork and enhancing one of the most iconic elements of the country.

During this decade, the Colonia Juarez became a cultural center due to several artists and intellectuals moving to the area. TANE became a benchmark for contemporary design and was visited by important historical figures such as María Felix, Oscar de la Renta, and the princes of Asturias, among many others.
In 1962, taking its inspiration from the cockfight of palenques, the Roosters of TANE were created, stunning jewelery pieces handmade in silver, yellow gold vermeil and pink gold, together with ruby eyes which would become and still are one of the brand's most iconic pieces.

Alquimística is founded, the workshop that to this day produces the pieces for the jewelery house.
At this time, Russell Marker approached TANE, as he was interested in creating reproductions of the great 18th century French goldsmith Thomas Germain, with pieces from the French period known as le Triomphe du Rocaille. Marker provided photographic studies of the pieces obtained directly from the Museum of Decorative Arts in Paris as well as the Louvre; in this way, TANE masters become experts in new processes such as chiseling, embossing, and forging in order to recreate pieces of high technical detail.
In 1974 the fusion between art and silver begian. Led by Pedro Leites, son of the founders, Objet D'Art pieces began to be developed together with many of the most important artists and architects in the world of design, a tradition that continues to this day. Some of the artists who have worked with TANE are: Mathias Goeritz, Leonora Carrington, Gunther Gerzso, Luis Barragán, Manuel Felguerez, Juan Soriano, Ricardo Regazzoni, Sergio Hernández, Marina Láscaris and Javier Marin, Francisco Toledo, Xawery Wolski.

For TANE, the teaching and dissemination of the trade began to form a central axis, and thus, the first TANE school was established in Michoacán, Mexico, which would be transformed two years later into the second workshop of the brand, which exists to this day.
In the mid-1980s, the second TANE school was founded in Zacatecas, which had great success for more than ten years.
During this time, a new design style begins in TANE, which moves further away from the baroque and more towards the simplifying and purifying lines.

On a reconnaissance trip to France, it is discovered that the silversmith trade was not yet established. TANE offers the French ambassador the chance to open a school in Phoërmel, which is still in operation to this day, and French goldsmiths visit Mexico in order to exchange knowledge and learning. The chains and links of TANE are established in the world of design and fashion in Mexico, part of the brand's heritage since its inception.

TANE now joins the BAL holding, and begins its expansion with stores throughout the country.
In 2012, for the 70th anniversary of the brand, a limited and numbered edition of feathers made of silver and vermeil was created, inspired by the texture of the iconic Roosters of TANE.
In this decade, international collaborations began to develop in jewelry collections: the first, in 2016, by the hand of legendary fashion icon, Iris Apfel. The second, in 2018, with Pantone, with which a collection inspired by the symmetry of the color value scales is created.

During 2019 the company presented some of the most successful collections in its history, including México Mi Amor - a tribute to the country's icons - and Dalia by TANE, a collection that immortalizes the National Flower of Mexico.
In addition, for the first time, a collaboration with Mexico's best tequila brand is launched: TANE in conjunction with Casa Dragones - the two brands that have been in charge of protecting the country's artisanal processes - on September 16 presented an exclusive trunk named TANE x Casa Dragones, limited and numbered to 16 pieces, to celebrate Mexican Independence Day. It turns out to be the beginning of a series of highly successful collaborations with various national and international luxury brands.
In order to continue exploring new territories, this is the year that e-commerce is launched in Mexico through www.tane.mx, becoming one of the first luxury brands to develop in the digital world in Mexico.
Last but not least, TANE launches the first luxury Pop-Up in Mexico: El Atelier de TANE, inside a completely restored and customized vintage 1971 Airstream Landyacht.

2020 turned out to be a challenging year for the world, and also for TANE. But despite the global COVID-19 pandemic, we continue to shine as always.
Always revaluing the brand's heritage, while continuously seeking to innovate, TANE launches another highly successful collection: Animales by TANE, as well as a series of new collaborations with the presentations of TANE x Casa Dragones, TANE x Las Garrafas and TANE x Rivero González.
During this year, TANE also introduced a completely new store concept, renovating the first boutiques, creating a new brand image and contemporary experience for its customers.
This unprecedented year is also marked by the launch of www.tane.com, making TANE available for the first time in the entire United States of America - the first step toward the brand's global expansion.
